For Olustee–Eldorado High School sophomore Elijah Gauge Lopez, basketball isn’t just a game — it’s a blessing. After missing last season due to injury, Elijah returned to the court with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude. “What motivates me is knowing how far I’ve come,” he said. “Missing last season really taught me not to take the game for granted. Every time I step on the court now, I’m thankful just to be able to play again.”
Elijah plays small forward for the Bulldogs, bringing energy, athleticism, and leadership every time he takes the floor. He credits much of his success and mindset to the people who’ve shaped him — his parents, coaches, and Pastor Ruben from Strong Tower Ministries in Altus. “They’ve taught me that character off the court matters just as much as performance on it,” Elijah said. “My parents and coaches push me to give my best, and Pastor Ruben keeps me accountable and focused on honoring God in everything I do.”
Faith and discipline play huge roles in Elijah’s journey. His coach, who he says has had the biggest impact on his life, expects effort and responsibility every day. “He’s taught me accountability, not just in basketball but in life,” Elijah shared.
The road back from injury hasn’t been easy, but it’s given Elijah perspective. “It’s taken patience, consistency, and a lot of hard work,” he said. “Sitting out made me realize that success isn’t just about playing; it’s about trusting God’s timing and appreciating the game in a whole new way.”
Now, being back on the court feels like a victory in itself. Elijah takes pride in representing Olustee–Eldorado, his family, and his faith every time he plays. “When I step on the court, I’m representing my team, my coaches, my family, and my community,” he said. “I want others to see Christ through how I carry myself.”
With Steph Curry as his favorite player and Oklahoma State University as his dream destination, Elijah is ready to keep growing as both an athlete and a person. And when he’s not on the court? You’ll probably find him hunting — where, as he jokes, “if it were for a grade, I’d have straight A’s.”
