In the small-town rhythm of Kiowa County, Amanda Montgomery’s days begin before sunrise and rarely slow until long after sunset. As the County Executive Director for the Farm Service Agency, she balances the demands of agriculture and administration with the beautiful chaos of being a sports mom to three active kids.
Her oldest, Esperanza, graduated from Hobart High School after years of softball seasons under beaming summer skies. Now, Amanda’s focus is split between her two boys: Dub, a freshman who juggles football, wrestling, and track, and Sean, a seventh grader who’s following right behind in football, basketball, and track. The Montgomery house is a blur of practices, uniforms, and travel cups, proof that in this family, teamwork extends far beyond the scoreboard.
When asked how she stays involved, Amanda laughs knowingly. “Schedules can be one of the hardest parts,” she admits. “During the winter, we might be at basketball one second and wrestling the next. Sometimes my husband and I have to divide and conquer.” Springtime means even more juggling, shuffling between high school and junior high track meets. Still, she makes it work because presence, she believes, is the greatest form of support.
Her kids know she’s always prepared. Need a Band-Aid, a bottle of water, or a snack? Amanda’s got it. That careful planning, she says, comes from loving them fiercely and knowing that showing up, truly showing up, makes all the difference.
Beyond sports, she’s deeply woven into her community. She serves as president of the Cross Country Track Booster, is a member of the All-Sports Booster Club, participates in Kiwanis, and helps feed kids at church on Wednesday nights.
Amanda reminds her children that priorities matter. “Education comes first,” she says. “I don’t ask for perfection, just their best in all things.”
Ask her what she loves most about Hobart High, and her eyes light up. “The teachers, the community, the encouragement, it’s all heart,” she says. “I love being in a small town. It’s a great day to be a Bearcat!”
