Zaerique Durrough is just a freshman at Altus High School, but he’s already laying the foundation for something bigger. A two-sport athlete competing in basketball and track, Durrough approaches each day with energy, purpose, and a mindset focused on growth, both on and off the field.
For Durrough, sports are about more than competition. They’ve helped shape his character and define who he is becoming.
“My sport has taught me to be better and how to be a leader.”
That mindset shows in the way he carries himself among teammates and in the classroom. He understands that leadership isn’t just about performance, it’s about attitude, effort, and how you treat others.
One person who has made a lasting impact on his journey is his favorite teacher.
“Mrs. Gamble, she was so fun, and she always knew how to make my day better.”
Durrough also draws motivation from family, especially his older cousin, who continues to push him to improve.
“Marquis Milton, he’s my older cousin, and he has always pushed me to get better.”
On the team, chemistry matters, and one teammate stands out for bringing positivity no matter the situation.
“Levi Hunter, you can talk to him about anything, and he always keeps good energy even when you’re not playing well.”
Representing Altus High School is something Durrough takes pride in. He wants his team to be known for more than wins.
“I want other people to look at us and say they have great manners, they’re kind and respectful. That’s how a team should be.”
Behind his drive is a strong support system, especially his uncle, who has played a major role in his life.
“I wanna say thank you to my uncle for raising me.”
Looking ahead, Durrough has clear goals and big dreams.
“Become a D1 athlete.”
He also looks up to players who embody competitiveness at the highest level.
“Darius Acuff Jr., he’s so competitive, and the way he play the game is elite.”
With his mindset, support system, and determination, Zaerique Durrough is just getting started, and his journey is one to watch.
