For Hollis High School junior Graydon Whorton, competing for the Tigers is more than just about sports; it’s about pride, perseverance, and representing his hometown with heart. A four-sport athlete, Graydon stays busy year-round, competing in cross country, basketball, baseball, and track. Balancing that many sports isn’t easy, but Graydon wouldn’t have it any other way.
“What motivates me the most is not failing my coaches, my teammates, and Hollis,” he said. That sense of responsibility keeps him pushing through every tough practice and every demanding season.
Graydon’s biggest role model is close to home, his dad. “He works hard, he’s honest, and he never gives up, even when he wants to,” Graydon shared. That same determination shows up in Graydon’s work ethic, both in athletics and academics. He also credits his mom, who doubles as his art teacher, for shaping his attitude and values. “She’s always been there for me and has taught me not to give up and to respect everyone, even when you’re not given any.”
When it comes to success, Graydon believes it’s all about preparation. “Practicing like I would play during a game, and practicing on my own,” he said. That approach paid off this year when he placed 26th at the state cross country meet, one of the proudest moments of his athletic career.
On the basketball court, he enjoys going up against teammate Braxton Lively, who constantly challenges him to learn new moves and improve his game. Graydon also makes a point to recognize those who don’t always get the attention they deserve, naming Wyatt Brill as one of the most underrated athletes in both track and cross country.
Outside of sports, Graydon is involved in Future Farmers of America and the Gifted & Talented program. He also follows faith-based mentors like Stuart Knechtle on social media, finding strength and inspiration in his message.
As a representative of Hollis when he competes, Graydon said, “It means a lot to wear Hollis across my chest because we are a family and we push each other to do our best.”
