Duncan Lady Demons Basketball Team Preview – Presented by L. Don Graham, Jr – Ameriprise Financial Advisor

The Duncan Lady Demons enter this season with renewed energy and a clear sense of purpose under second-year head coach Alarie Mayze. After an impressive 18-10 campaign, Mayze is focused not just on wins and losses but on establishing a foundation built on fundamentals, player development, and lasting team chemistry.

“I’m looking forward to building team chemistry,” Mayze said. “The first thing for us is working on fundamentals, helping each player reach their full potential. Our motto is to be ‘Champions of Excellence.’ That’s what we strive for every day.”

Mayze, who works with both the middle and high school programs, is deeply invested in developing players throughout the district. Her vision goes beyond immediate results; she’s laying the groundwork for sustained success by creating a culture of commitment, confidence, and joy in the game. “Winning a championship would be a great bonus,” she added, “but my main focus is building a program where the girls love the game and grow through it.”

The Lady Demons will be led by senior Layla Talley, a steady presence and returning captain who’s been part of the program since its start. While known for her quiet leadership, Talley is stepping into a more vocal role this season. “Layla leads by example,” Mayze said. “But now we’re challenging her to find her voice and take charge as a true leader on and off the floor.”

In the frontcourt, Maren Turkett brings athleticism and focus after transitioning from volleyball. She’s expected to anchor the team’s inside play and provide leadership through her competitiveness. Alongside her, Karley Alvarez, returning to basketball for the first time since her freshman year, adds size and potential in the paint.

Speed and playmaking will come from Averi Petersen, one of the team’s fastest and most intelligent players, whose court awareness will be key to Duncan’s offensive rhythm.

Rounding out the roster are several emerging contributors, including Peyton Williams, Ellie Petersen, Arielle Rodriguez, and Zara Ozaltin, all of whom bring depth and energy to a team eager to make its mark.

With a focus on growth, unity, and excellence, the Lady Demons are building something special, one fundamental, one practice, and one moment at a time.
