Junior defender Keirstin Schornick takes pride in doing the dirty work in the back line while representing something bigger than herself every time she pulls on a Duncan jersey.
“I play center back and outside back,” Schornick said.
She said one of the highlights of her high school career so far has come in the postseason. “Making it to the second round of playoffs two years in a row,” she said of the accomplishment she is most proud of.
On a personal level, the sport has shaped how she handles challenges. “My sport has taught me discipline even when you’re tired or don’t feel like it that day you still show and put all your effort onto the field,” Schornick said.
In the classroom, one teacher stands out for the way he invested in his students. “Coach Kelly because he was one of those teachers who cared to get to know his students and was a good teacher,” she said.
Schornick credits former teammate Syd Miller with helping her grow on and off the field. “I would say Syd Miller because she led by example and helped me through my sophomore year a ton,” she said.
Wearing Duncan across her chest is something she never takes lightly. “My favorite part is wearing my school’s name across my jersey and knowing it’s representing something bigger than myself,” Schornick said.
When adversity hits, she leans on a piece of advice that keeps her grounded. “No matter how hard it gets, keep your head up and try to find the good in the situation,” she said.
She is quick to acknowledge the people who have invested in her development. “Thank you to the coaches that have put the time and effort into me and have helped me become the player I am,” Schornick said.
As for role models, she looks to a rising global star. “Lamine Yamal, because he shows that if you work for your dreams hard enough, they can come true,” she said.
