Former Hobart High School student-athlete, Reydon Salazar, is now a student and member of the basketball team at Western Oklahoma State College. Now a sophomore at WOSC, Salazar is playing point guard for the team and is loving being part of the Pioneer family.

“I chose WOSC for the small-town feel. The class sizes aren’t too big which in turn helps the students get a better learning experience in my opinion. WOSC is also very close to home, so I have the support of my family just 30 minutes away,” said Salazar.

Going from high school to college is always an adjustment for students. When Salazar made the jump, she knew all of the responsibility would fall on her to get to class and be on time for practice.

“The biggest adjustment from high school to college was how I had to be more independent and more responsible. Those 8am classes seem harder to wake up for in college when your mom isn’t there to drag you out of bed,” said Salazar.

As a student at WOSC, Salazar said there are many things about the school and campus that she enjoys.

“Starting a new chapter comes with change, and change is sometimes hard. We have all had change, so we’ve bonded through that together. We’ve created a sisterhood where we can laugh, joke, and just relax together,” Salazar said. “My favorite place on campus is Pioneer Point. It’s a spot where I feel I can just chill at. I’ve made many friends there!”

The same can be said for the classroom. Salazar has enjoyed her classes and professors at WOSC. But life on campus has included some surprises.

“My favorite class has been biology, specifically the lab portion. Our professor made it so fun and engaging,” Salazar said. “The time it requires to be a student-athlete has surprised me the most. We practice up to three times a day and have to put in time by ourselves. We travel far distances for games. It really is a job, but it’s a job that I’m forever thankful to have.”

Away from campus, Salazar said he enjoys two great places to grab a meal.

“You cannot beat Sakura or Romas! They are my favorites.”

The sophomore offers this advice to students entering college life for the first time.

“My advice is to just go to class. Showing up is part of your grade so think of it as a free 100,” said Salazar.
