When a high school student competes in a sports program, they have to do more than just work on their sport and try to get better. They also have to be solid students in the classroom so they are not ineligible to compete. Zane Allen is a senior at Sayre and he says that he has people that help him stay focused and keep his priorities in order.
“My family helps me stay on track, especially my mom,” Zane said. “She always knows what’s going on and what I need even when I forget or thought I would be fine.”
Zane is a member of the football, basketball, and track teams at Sayre. He says that he is thankful to wear his school’s uniform when he competes.
“Pride is a big reason why I like to represent my school,” he said. “People that I do not know are cheering for my success and they do the same for all the kids.”
Over the years, Zane has put in a lot of time and effort to improve his skills. He knows the work is worth it because he has seen it payoff.
“To be successful, it has taken hard work and dedication,” he said. “Not just on and off the field, but also in the classroom and community. The highlight of my career so far would have to be making the podium at state. It was a great feeling.”
There are those that have had an impact on Allen’s life and helped him get to where he is today. He has a couple of them that stand out.
“My biggest role model would have to be coach Merrick,” he said. “He has a way of making you feel like you can conquer anything thrown at you. My favorite teacher would have to be Mr. Moran. After six years of being in his class, he has seen me at my worst and best. He is always someone that I can turn to if I need him.”
With his senior year coming to a close soon, Allen already has his sights set on his post-high school years.
“I am attending Southern Nazarene University in the Fall to play football,” he said. “I’m very excited to be representing my school and family while following my dreams.”
