When a student moves into a new school district, it can be a tough time of transition and figuring out where you fit in. The same goes for the entire family. Kristin Thompson and her family moved to the Duke Public School district and she says that the move has been so seamless and she is thankful to be a part of such a great school.
“I love how welcoming the Duke community has been to our family as a transfer,” she said. “I love that our school is small and that my child is truly loved by so many. Duke School is the definition of a community that cares, and I will forever be grateful.”
Thompson is the mother of senior Brock Thompson, who is a member of the school’s basketball team. She says that with her son’s high school career coming to a close, she cherishes all the memories that they have made.
“The most challenging part of being the parent of an athlete is knowing that I will miss this one day,” she said. “I will miss watching them fail and succeed on the court. That is what helps build character. Duke has helped my son build his confidence on and off the court, and I will miss the community that truly supports the athletes in our small town.”
While she enjoys being in the stands cheering on her son and his team, Kristin enjoys doing other things to stay active in the program.
“I enjoy volunteering and supporting all extracurricular activities,” she stated. “Things such as fundraising for state shirts, midnight basketball and new uniforms for the girls’ team, or different areas of need for our golf team. And we love driving our golf cart in town to watch the boys baseball team. My husband and I love to give, work, and volunteer. So it’s safe to say if there’s an event or a need in our community, you will see our faces.”
Kristin is also a member of Duke’s PTO, an honorary mom of the girl’s basketball team, and a parent supporter of the student council.
