Making the transition from high school to college is an adjustment. Keeping your own schedule, getting to class on time, dividing your free time between studies and just hanging out can become overwhelming. Now imagine adding athletics to the list.

That is exactly what Western Oklahoma State College freshman Blake Maxwell is doing this semester. Maxwell enters the WOSC family with the goal of pursuing a degree while participating in athletics.

“I’m a freshman and I am majoring in physical education, and I play basketball,” Maxwell said.

The natural transition from high school to college has been somewhat of an easy one for Maxwell thanks to WOSC and his desire to stay close to home.

“WOSC is a smaller school and it fit better for me,” Maxwell said. “I graduated from Mountain View-Gotebo High School.”

As a new member of the basketball team, Maxwell said getting to know his new teammates has been one of the more enjoyable aspects of playing basketball in college.

“I like that my team knows each other, and my teammates are just great teammates to have,” said Maxwell.

Finding time for schoolwork and basketball has been the focus for Maxwell. That doesn’t leave much time for other activities, but the freshman plans on becoming more involved around campus. Staying on top of his studies is a top priority.

“I would say college is different at first, but your teachers are there to help you succeed and will help you if you ask. I’m not involved with any other school activities at the moment,” said Maxwell.

When he does have a moment of free time, Maxwell said he enjoys hanging out with friends and playing some ball or playing video games. As for the best thing about being a student at WOSC? “The best thing for me as a student at WOSC is I get to continue playing basketball at the collegiate level,” said Maxwell.
