For Weatherford High School senior Payton Mills, sports are more than just games; they’re a platform to compete, grow, and set an example for others. A three-sport standout, Mills plays softball, basketball, and track, bringing versatility, leadership, and determination to every team she represents.
On the softball field, Mills holds down the corners at first and third base, while on the basketball court, she’s a strong forward who thrives in competitive atmospheres. What drives her is simple: “Wanting to win,” Mills said with a smile. That competitive spirit has carried her through countless challenges, both physical and mental, and ultimately led to one of her proudest moments, helping Weatherford capture the 4A state championship.
Mills looks up to basketball star Paige Bueckers, admiring her work ethic and leadership. She carries those same traits into her own role, striving to be someone her teammates can count on. She especially values her practice battles with teammate Ella Strickler, who constantly pushes her to improve. At the same time, she recognizes unsung heroes like teammate Addie Blackwell, praising her relentless effort and commitment to getting better.
One of the highlights of her career has been beating rival Elk City, a matchup that always brings out the best in both teams. “The atmosphere when we play them and win is very exciting,” Mills shared.
Balancing athletics with academics and activities isn’t easy, but Mills has found her rhythm. A member of the Student Council and a player for the Oklahoma Swarm basketball program, she credits hard work, dedication, and time management for keeping her on track. She also acknowledges the impact of teacher Darby Schamburg, who has been a steady source of support.
For Mills, representing Weatherford means everything. “I’m playing for more than just myself,” she said. “I’m representing both my school and community, and I want the younger girls to see me as a positive role model.”
Grateful for her coaches, teammates, and especially her parents, Mills knows she hasn’t walked this journey alone. And as her senior year unfolds, she’s leaving behind a legacy of leadership, resilience, and pride for Weatherford athletics.
