Ricky Morris is a teacher and a coach at Weatherford High School. He says that his decision to make being an educator his career was one that he made as his college career was ending.
“As my time playing college baseball was coming to an end, I decided that I wanted to give back to the game that had given so much to me,” he said. “Combine that and the fact that I loved Algebra, I decided that my calling was to be an educator and coach.”
He is now in his twentieth year of teaching at Weatherford. Before coming to Weatherford, he spent two years at Milford High School in Texas and nine years at Elk City. Morris currently teaches Algebra I and Algebra II and he coaches the high school softball team. This past season, his softball team won the Class 4A state championship.
As a teacher, Ricky interacts with numerous students each day. He knows that with that amount of time spent together, he has the opportunity to be an influence on their lives.
“What I love about being an educator is the fact that I have a chance to impact a young life in a positive way every day.”
There were people throughout his life that had an impact on his decision to become a teacher and coach. But there were a couple of them that had a big influence.
“Growing up in Andrews, Texas, there were two role models that led me towards this path,” he said. “Robert Crawford was one of my Junior High coaches and Marc Boswell was a computer and math teacher. Both of these men made sure that everyone of their student-athletes were given the same opportunity to succeed.”
When he is not in the classroom or on the field, Ricky enjoys spending time at home with his family.
“My wife, Deb, and I live on a farm that has been in her family for 128 years,” he said. “We have one son, Paden, who is currently working in Florida. Our daughter, Dacey, is currently going to school and playing softball at Cowley College in Kansas.”
