WEATHERFORD EAGLES
Coach: DERRICK BULL
2023 Record: 28-2
OUTLOOK
The Weatherford Eagles enter the 2024 season looking to build on an incredible run that saw them finish 28-2 and claim the 4A State Runner-Up title. Returning four starters from last year’s squad, Head coach Derrick Bull is optimistic about the team’s ability to compete at a high level again this season. The Eagles have a great mix of size, experience, and talent. With the core group back and some key additions, Weatherford is ready to take that next step. Weatherford will lean heavily on its dynamic group of seniors, led by CJ Nickson (6-6, 230, Sr. F), the all-time leading scorer in program history with over 1,700 career points. Nickson, a 6’6 forward with a commanding presence, will once again be a focal point on both ends of the floor. The team also features brothers Tate Sage (6-7, 200, Sr. G) and Ethan Sage (6-7, 200, Sr. F), both 6’7 seniors. Tate, a versatile guard, has committed to Drake University, while Ethan, a forward, has drawn interest from multiple Division II programs and is on the radar of Division I schools. A significant addition to the roster is Walker Kennedy (6-3, 190, Sr. G), a 6’3 guard who transferred from Piedmont. Kennedy made an immediate impact last season at Piedmont, averaging 18.4 points per game, and looks to continue his strong play as part of Weatherford’s backcourt. Jackson Smith (6-3, 175, Sr. G) is poised to make an impact this season on the court. With an eye for the rim and his impressive shooting ability, Smith will also be a key player to watch this season. The Eagles’ size and skill across multiple positions will be a key factor in their success.
Coach Bull emphasizes the importance of chemistry and experience this year. “Having four starters back,” gives Weatherford a huge advantage this season. “After coming up short last season, the Eagles know what it takes to win, and they’re hungry to finish the job this time.
The Eagles boast an impressive lineup with height and experience at every position. The senior-laden roster features multiple players with college interest, and their balanced attack will allow them to challenge any opponent.
With size, experience, and an infusion of fresh talent, the Weatherford Eagles are poised to make another deep postseasonrun. Led by CJ Nickson’s scoring prowess, the Sage brothers’ versatility, and the addition of Walker Kennedy, the Eagles are a force to be reckoned with in Class 4A basketball. Their mission is clear: get back to the state championship—and finish the job.
With a talented group of upperclassmen and a deep bench, the Eagles are ready to contend for another state title.
