Thomas High School senior Harper Hamar has spent years preparing for this final season, and now, with one last run alongside lifelong teammates, he is focused on making it count.
Hamar, a senior standout for the Thomas Terriers, plays both slot receiver and outside linebacker, contributing on both sides of the ball with a blend of athleticism and discipline. His journey in athletics began long before high school, rooted in a tight-knit group of teammates who have grown up together through years of competition.
“The best part of my team is how we have been together since first grade in flag football and then peewee football in fifth and sixth grade,” Hamar said. “Now we are in our final run together as seniors.”
That shared history has built a strong bond and sense of trust, something Hamar values deeply as the team pushes through its final season together.
On the field, Hamar embraces the challenges that come with his dual roles. As an outside linebacker, he notes that “the most difficult part is keeping containment on defense,” a responsibility that requires discipline and awareness on every play. Offensively, he has proven to be a reliable target at slot receiver, highlighted by one of his favorite career moments.
“My sophomore year, catching the final touchdown pass against Mangum to help seal the win,” Hamar said.
Moments like that have helped define his high school experience, but Hamar’s growth extends beyond highlight plays. Through athletics, he has learned valuable life lessons that continue to shape his mindset.
“It has taught me discipline and that sometimes things don’t always go my way — stay the course and stay focused,” he said.
Preparation has also played a key role in his success. Hamar credits preseason workouts as one of his favorite parts of being on the team, where the foundation for each season is built.
“I love doing preseason workouts with the team,” he said.
Before each game, Hamar sticks to a simple routine to stay locked in mentally.
“I listen to old country music to stay calm and focused,” he said.
Off the field, Hamar’s interests reflect his rural Oklahoma roots. In his free time, he enjoys team roping, pig hunting and working with cattle, activities that mirror the work ethic and resilience he brings to football.
In the classroom, Hamar’s favorite subject is agriculture, where he studies under Mr. Kliewer, further connecting his academic life to his personal interests.
Over the course of his career, Hamar has seen his share of unusual moments on the field, including one particularly memorable incident.
“The craziest thing I’ve seen is watching an opposing team try to gauge out our quarterback’s eyes,” he said.
As his senior season unfolds, Hamar remains focused on finishing strong alongside the teammates who have been with him from the beginning. With years of shared experience and a commitment to staying the course, he is determined to make the most of his final chapter in a Thomas uniform.
