On the softball diamond, Layla Stout holds down third base. On the basketball court, she works as a forward. On the track, she clears hurdles in the 100-meter race. But the Sayre senior’s most meaningful role may be the one that does not appear in a scorebook: teammate.
Stout has been involved in sports since first grade, growing through the lessons that come with softball, basketball and track. Along the way, she has learned that competition is about more than statistics, individual recognition or the final result.
“The stats don’t matter,” Stout said. “What matters is the effort you put in. Always give 100% of what you can give.”
That mindset has helped make Stout a dependable presence for the Eagles. Her biggest personal honor came when she was named the Eagle Wing, an award recognizing the athlete who best represents being a supportive teammate and cheerleader for others.
For Stout, the recognition meant a great deal because encouraging teammates is one of her favorite parts of athletics.
“My biggest accomplishment was being named the Eagle Wing,” Stout said. “My favorite part of sports is cheering on my teammates.”
One of her favorite memories came during the state track meet, when she competed alongside friends and watched nearly all of them earn a place on the podium. The experience captured what she values most about sports: sharing meaningful moments and celebrating the success of those around her.
Stout said athletics have also taught her the importance of sportsmanship.
“I’ve been in sports since first grade, and the main thing it has taught me is sportsmanship,” she said. “Always be the kind one on the court or field. Glorify God in all you do.”
She credits teammate Paisen Damron with leaving a lasting mark on her athletic career. The two became close friends while also helping one another stay accountable, especially in emotional moments during competition.
“She always lifted me up and got on to me when I wasn’t being a good leader,” Stout said.
Stout also draws inspiration from Laney Easter, a multi-sport athlete who followed Christ and made a positive impact on those around her. She hopes to carry that same example into each sport and every interaction.
She is grateful for coaches who have helped her continue to grow. Coach Nelson helped Stout rediscover her love for softball, while Coach Pugh has consistently challenged her to improve as an athlete.
Most of all, Stout appreciates her mother, who has been a constant supporter throughout her journey.
“She rarely ever missed a game,” Stout said. “She has always been my biggest fan.”
