“I’m the point guard, so I make sure I know all of our offenses well,” said Gracie Myers, a senior basketball player at Sayre High School. “I watch film and learn how to combat other team’s defenses.” For Gracie, leadership on the court isn’t just about making plays; it’s about studying the game, understanding strategy, and keeping her team on track.
Gracie’s love for sports began at a young age. “I started playing t-ball when I was three, then I joined the Kids Inc. basketball league in Elk City when I was eight,” she shared. Inspired by her older sister’s involvement in basketball, Gracie followed in her footsteps. “My older sister played for the Clinton league, and I looked up to her, so I decided to play too.”
Team chemistry has been essential to Gracie’s experience at Sayre. “We’re all very good friends, and that reflects on the court. They’re all so selfless, and we play as a team very well.” As Gracie gears up for her final season, she hopes to build on those relationships. “I hope that we grow closer as a team, and I enjoy my last season.”
Adapting to change hasn’t always been easy. “Getting a new coach and having to adapt to a new style of playing” has been one of the biggest challenges of her career. But summer basketball camps with her team have created some of her best memories. “Going to basketball camp in the summer with my team has been some of the best memories of my life.”
While Gracie doesn’t plan to pursue basketball after high school, her sights are set on a future in psychology. “I plan on attending college and majoring in psychology. I hope to focus more on my academics and career.” However, she remains grateful for those who have shaped her journey. “God, my parents, coach Staci Wilson, and my teammates” have all played important roles.
With the support of her community driving her and her teammates to perform their best, Gracie is proud of both her personal progress and her growth in confidence. “The support is very important to us. We really appreciate everything that our family members, school staff, and our booster club does for us.”
