Clinton’s Kalyssa Staggs – Volleyball Spotlight – Presented by Oklahoma Bank & Trust

Kalyssa Staggs, a senior at Clinton High School, has been a formidable presence on the volleyball court since she first picked up the sport in eighth grade. “I got started because my friends influenced me to join volleyball. I fell in love with the sport and have played ever since,” she said.

Kalyssa’s dedication to volleyball is evident in her role and preparation. “My position is right side hitter and occasionally outside hitter for the CHS Varsity team. I prepare to do my part for the team by showing up and putting in the hard work that is needed to better myself,” she explained. As a senior, she embraces her leadership role, striving to “be positive and encourage my teammates to try their best.”

Practicing three to five days a week, Kalyssa engages in a rigorous routine that includes weights, cardio, and on-court drills and scrimmages. This dedication has helped her navigate through challenging seasons, particularly her sophomore year. “I faced many discouraging moments while trying to remain positive for my team. I overcame it because I never gave up, and I got a new coach my junior year that lifted me up and pushed me to realize my potential.”

Kalyssa’s commitment extends beyond volleyball. She is actively involved in her church, serving in various capacities, and participates in the CHS Advanced Choir and Clinton FFA. “I am very involved in my church, including praise team, youth group, kids worship intern, teaching pre-k, and volunteering for miscellaneous acts of service.”

While Kalyssa does not plan to continue playing volleyball after high school, her aspirations remain high. “In five years, I see myself newly graduated from college… pursuing a career in ministry,” she shared. Community support has been pivotal in Kalyssa’s journey. “It shows the players that people care about the success of the team… it especially helps hype the team up which pushes us to play better,” she said. Her advice to younger players is equally uplifting: “Don’t be scared to go out and try it. It may seem
hard or discouraging at first but don’t give up because with hard work and dedication you can be successful.”
