Addison Newcomb’s high school career in cheerleading has been full of growth, determination, and passion. Starting out as a competitive gymnast at just three years old, she transitioned into cheer after realizing gymnastics was becoming too much to handle as she entered middle school. “My mom then placed me in competitive cheer in the summer after my sixth-grade year,” Addison said. “It was pretty easy for me to catch on considering my years of gymnastics, and I ended up falling in love with cheerleading.”
Her cheer career began with competitive squads, but as time went on, Addison decided to focus solely on school cheer, which she describes as being “just as fun as competitive cheer.” Her love for stunting, a skill that stands out from her gymnastics background, solidified her passion for cheer. “We would always stunt at recess in elementary school and get in trouble for it!”
Now a captain for the Clinton High School squad, Addison is dedicated to being a strong role model. “I strive to be a great role model and example for not only the other cheerleaders but any other student-athlete,” she said, emphasizing the importance of bringing energy and positivity to every practice. Her leadership is critical, especially when the team faces off-days. “If I am having an off day, I typically don’t let it show and put on a smile the minute I step into practice.”
Addison’s goals for the upcoming season are clear: “My biggest goal right now is to land my full on the dead mat and hopefully advance to the next round of All-State.”
Her mother, who is also her cheer coach (Angie Newcomb), has been a pillar of support for Addison: “She took a big step and became the coach going into my freshman year to make sure I got the best high school cheer experience. Not only has she turned this program around in the best way, but she has also made this such a fun four years.”
Looking back, Addison is most proud of how far her team has come. “We just keep getting better and better every year,” she said. Beyond cheerleading, Addison also shines in softball and golf, finding joy in balancing multiple sports and being part of Clinton’s athletic community.
With a bright future ahead, Addison plans to pursue a degree in health sciences and hopes to continue cheering in college.
