CLINTON WRESTLING PREVIEW
As the 2024 wrestling season gets ready to open, Clinton head coach Robert Pitman feels good about the prospects for his guys and gals on the mat.
“This is just the second year for the girl’s program, and we have six of the seven girls back this year with just one senior. We’ve also added five new wrestlers so we’re building a pretty good girls’ program and we’re hoping to start putting girls’ wrestling on the map here in in Clinton.”
One of the top returning wrestlers for Pitman is Angelina Ramirez.
“She’s a natural born leader who has picked up the sport really quickly and fallen in love with it,” said Pitman. “Her wrestling partner, Kassandra Kaline, is also a hard worker who could have a great year for us.”
Another name to keep an eye on is sophomore Kapri Stanley.
“Kapri is coming back from a shoulder injury last year, but she’s got a lot of experience in pee-wee wrestling, and she has a good opportunity to make a name for herself this year,” said Pitman.
There are lots of high expectations on the boys’ side of the Red Tornado program starting with two guys who placed at state last year returning.
“Marquis Martin is a senior who placed third at state last season at 106 pounds,” said Pitman. “I think he’ll be a favorite this year to take it all. The same is true for Malachi Lorne who placed third at state in 2023 at 215 pounds. We also have three guys back who qualified for state last year in Marcus Wilson, who is battling Malachi for that spot at 215, Landon Wilson is a junior who qualified at 157 pounds and Vicente Gutierez who qualified as a freshman last year at 138 pounds. Our heavyweight spot will be filled by Brayden Fuller, whose brother was a state qualifier last year and the two of them went at it every week, so I expect Brayden to be every bit as good as his brother. Our sophomores got a lot of experience last year, so they provide us a lot of depth this year and I think we’ll have one of the better teams Clinton has had in several years.”
