VYPE Athlete Feature: Cheyenne’s Kimberly Denney
By Olivia Jones
Kimberlyn “Kimbo” Denney is making her mark at Cheyenne High School as a driven and competitive junior who thrives in both softball and basketball. Denney brings a winning mindset to everything she does.
In slow-pitch, she works at shortstop and second base, while in fast-pitch she takes on the demanding role of catcher. “My want to win” is what fuels her every day, whether she’s in practice or under the lights on game day.
Denney credits her mom as her biggest role model and inspiration. “She is the strongest person I know and inspires me to push through hard things,” Denney said. That strength and resilience have shaped the way Denney approaches challenges.
One teacher who has had a major impact on her is Levi Pierce. “He taught me that everything you do in life, do it with urgency,” Denney said. That lesson has stuck with her.
Success, Denney says, comes from a lot of practice and work. She understands that improvement doesn’t come without effort, and she’s willing to put in the time to get better. One of her biggest career highlights so far came in the fall of 2024, when she and her team made it to the state tournament — a moment that stands out as a reward for all the hard work.
In practice, Denney enjoys competing against teammate Cambree McGlothlin. “We push each other every day,” she said. She also pointed out Ella Powers as one of the most underappreciated players on the team. “She does a lot of things for our team and doesn’t get a lot of credit for them, but she continues to do great things,” Denney shared.
Off the field, Denney stays busy and involved in PLC, FFA, NHS, and BPA. Balancing all of it takes strong time management, a skill she’s learned to rely on as her schedule continues to fill up.
“I’ve watched tons of games of girls that played before me, and now it’s my turn,” she said. With such a supportive community behind her, wearing her school’s jersey is something she takes pride in.
She looks up to Kenzie Hansen and names Lauren Chamberlain as her favorite softball player. Her dream is to play at the University of Oklahoma, and with her work ethic, competitiveness, and passion, Kimberlyn Denney is well on her way to chasing that goal.
