Canute’s Tatum Gillett-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Jackie Dickerson Shelter Insurance

For Tatum Gillett, the work that matters most often happens when no one is watching. Whether she is sharpening her game in the circle, preparing at first base or managing schoolwork around a busy athletic schedule, the Canute High School sophomore understands that meaningful success is built through consistent effort.

Gillett competes in softball and basketball for the Trojans, bringing a competitive mindset to both seasons. In softball, she pitches right-handed and plays first base, embracing the responsibility that comes with being involved in every play. Her goals are high: to continue improving each time she takes the field, win a state championship and eventually play softball at the next level.

“The things that motivate me the most are wanting to be better every time I step on the field,” Gillett said. “Winning a state championship has always been a dream of mine, and playing softball at the next level.”

That drive has already helped Gillett experience memorable moments in her young high school career. She has been part of multiple state-tournament teams and was also a member of a basketball team that captured a state championship. Those experiences have given her a taste of what can happen when a team commits to one another and works toward a shared purpose.

“To be successful in sports and in life, it takes extra work behind the scenes that nobody sees,” Gillett said.

While Gillett has personal goals, she approaches competition with a team-centered perspective. Rather than focusing on one rival, she said Canute takes the schedule one day at a time, with the next opponent always becoming the most important. The same mindset carries into practice, where she appreciates the chance to work with every teammate and help make the group stronger.

“We strive to make each other better,” she said.

Gillett also takes pride in wearing Canute across her uniform. She recognizes the expectations that come with representing a program and community with a tradition of success.

“To represent Canute and the community gives me a lot of pride, knowing I’m trying to uphold a standard of success that was laid long before I was here,” Gillett said.

Outside athletics, Gillett is involved in FCA and relies on time management to balance school and sports. She is thankful for teachers Mrs. Edler and Mrs. Maddox, who taught her when she was younger and continue supporting her today.

Gillett draws inspiration from her cousin, KK Peeler, a college athlete who has persevered while living with Type 1 diabetes. She also looks up to pitchers NiJaree Canady and Teagan Kavan. With strong examples around her and ambitious goals ahead, Gillett continues putting in the work to make every opportunity count.
