Calumet’s Lila Winegeart-Athlete Spotlight

The view from behind home plate suits Lila Winegeart. As Calumet’s catcher, the senior sees the entire field, guides her teammates and handles the pressure that comes with being involved in every pitch.

That same competitive spirit carries Winegeart through a busy three-sport career for the Chieftains. She plays catcher in softball, guard in basketball and competes in the 100-meter dash during track season. Each sport challenges her differently, but all have helped shape the way she approaches both athletics and life.

One of Winegeart’s proudest athletic memories came through track, where she earned an offer and had the opportunity to compete at the state meet. Reaching that stage was a reward for the training, commitment and confidence it takes to step onto the track and perform when it matters most.

For Winegeart, sports have also brought an important lesson that extends well beyond wins and losses.

“Patience,” Winegeart said. “And lots of it.”

Whether she is waiting for the right pitch as a catcher, working through a difficult stretch on the basketball court or preparing for a race, patience has become a valuable part of her growth. It has taught her to trust the process, keep working and stay focused even when results do not come immediately.

Winegeart draws much of her inspiration from her mother, someone she admires for the determination she brings to every goal.

“My Mama, because she literally is the live version of Barbie,” Winegeart said. “She puts her mind to something and gets it done. She can do anything. She has a dream and makes it happen.”

That example has helped motivate Winegeart to pursue her own goals with confidence. She has also been impacted by former Calumet teammate Angellyne De La Cruz, a graduated senior who set a standard through her attitude and leadership.

“Angellyne De La Cruz always had a good attitude and was always a great team leader,” Winegeart said.

In the classroom, Winegeart appreciates the influence of her history teacher, Mr. Cooper, whom she calls “the GOAT.” She also carries with her advice from Coach Nichols: “Be yourself and make the world a better place.”

As her senior year continues, Winegeart is grateful for the people who have helped make her journey possible, especially her parents.

“Thanks to my parents for always supporting me and being there for me for everything I do,” Winegeart said.
