Wilson’s Avery Wharton – Golf Spotlight – Presented by Champion Wholesale

Avery Wharton is a senior at Wilson High School. She participates in Beta, FCA, basketball, fast pitch and slow pitch softball, and golf. She began her golfing career five years ago through her parents and her competitiveness.. Avery’s favorite part about golf is getting to be outside. She’s won Golfer of the Year three times, defensive player of the year, and has been named All-Ardmorite.

Her biggest positive impact is her grandma, because she learned how to play golf just to be able to play the game with Avery and has spent countless hours on the course by her side. “Her dedication and support push me to work harder and I appreciate every moment we share,” Avery says. Her role model is Michael Jordan, because of his work ethic, determination, and mindset. “He never let failure stop him and always pushed himself to improve,” she says.

Avery’s favorite subject in school is science, because it helps her to understand the world, encourages her curiosity, and makes learning exciting for her through experiments and discoveries. After high school, she plans to play golf through college and to get a degree in marketing. In her free time, Avery likes to hang out with her friends and family, and doing anything outdoors.

For Avery, being a great athlete means having mental toughness, focus, resilience, and confidence under pressure. “The best players learn from mistakes, stay disciplined, and keep pushing forward,” she says. Sports have taught her discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. When things get tough, Avery stays motivated by her passion for the game, her goals, the people that support her, and that her ability to play was a gift from God that she doesn’t want to ever take for granted. Her advice to other athletes is to stay disciplined, embrace failure, and always give it your all.
