Entering her sophomore year, Western Oklahoma State College cheerleader Presley Johnson is majoring in Liberal Arts and is looking forward to getting her second year of college underway.
Originally from Tipton, Oklahoma, Johnson said she enjoyed her first year of college as a student while learning new things on the cheer team.
“I enjoyed being with the new friends I made this year on the team and the fun experience of attending Nationals in Florida and finishing third! I also liked the challenge of learning new skills as a flyer,” said Johnson.
Johnson began her cheer career in the eighth grade and continued through high school, earning her way onto the team at WOSC after she graduated. The first year of college can be a challenge, but Johnson said she learned to balance everything including work.
“It was challenging to learn how to schedule my time between school, work, cheer practices and games,” Johnson said. “I tried to keep track of things by writing them in a planner.”
For Johnson, being a student-athlete at WOSC was the perfect fit for her college experience.
“Western has a very relaxed and fun atmosphere. The classes are small, and the faculty really seems to take an interest in all the students and want to help us succeed,” said Johnson.
Staying busy does keep her from enjoying some of the activities happening around campus. Johnson said her two favorite places on campus are Pioneer Point and the cheer practice gym.
“I didn’t have a lot of time to be involved in other school activities my first year because of cheer commitments, but I would like to be more involved at Western this coming year,” said Johnson.
Her advice to the freshman coming to campus this fall?
“I would advise incoming students to not procrastinate on completing assignments and to talk to other students in class,” said Johnson.
