Walters Blue Devils – Football Team Preview – Presented by Farm Credit Western Oklahoma

WALTERS BLUE DEVILS

Coach: FARON GRIFFIN

9-2

OFFENSE

After a stellar 9-2 campaign last season, the Walters Blue Devils are set to reload on offense following the graduation of 16 seniors. Despite their youth, Coach Faron Griffin likes the makeup of this year’s group, which includes returning starters and new faces stepping in to contribute. Senior Ryder Hanson (5-10, 175), a three-year starter on the offensive line, will make the transition to tight end to give the offense a physical blocker and reliable pass-catching option. Junior running back Carson Jones (6-1, 190) will be counted on to shoulder much of the workload in the backfield with his combination of size and athleticism. Out wide, the Blue Devils feature a blend of speed and length. Senior receiver Gage Sansome (5-7, 145) brings quickness and experience, while junior Kelton Southerland (6-2, 204) is a tall, athletic target with strong hands who will stretch the field vertically. A new name to watch is Kanyon Stimson, who has joined the program with a reputation for hard work and toughness. Though he is new to football, coaches expect him to develop into a force on the offensive and defensive lines thanks to his relentless motor and strength. As this young group gels, Walters will rely on their work ethic and hunger to prove themselves in a competitive district.

DEFENSE

Defensively, the Blue Devils will feature several returning contributors who bring experience and leadership. Carson Jones and Ryder Hanson will anchor the linebacker corps, setting the tone with their physical play and knowledge of the scheme. Hanson’s leadership and Jones’ athleticism should help stabilize the front seven. In the secondary, Sansome is back after recording 36 tackles and four interceptions last season, giving the defense a proven playmaker against the pass. Southerland’s size and speed will be valuable in coverage and in run support. Senior Jace Pequenio will step into a starting role, bringing character and steady presence to the unit. Hunter Bishop has emerged as a hard-running, dedicated player who made impressive strides this offseason and will be counted on to contribute. With a mix of returning starters and hungry newcomers, Walters aims to build on last year’s success and remain a contender in 2025.
