For Elgin High School senior Mason Thornton, baseball has always been more than just a game; it’s a way to grow as a person, a leader, and a teammate. As a seasoned player for the Owls, Thornton has built a reputation for his work ethic, character, and quiet motivation that pushes his teammates to give their all.
Throughout his high school career, Thornton’s dedication has helped Elgin baseball reach new heights, including one of his proudest memories, playing in the state championship game.
“My most proud accomplishment is making it to the state championship game,” Thornton said. “It showed how far we’d come as a team and how hard work can really pay off.”
For Thornton, baseball has been a teacher in its own right, shaping his values and how he approaches life.
“Baseball has taught me how to be a leader and someone to rely on,” he said.
That sense of leadership extends beyond the field. Thornton deeply appreciates the support of his favorite teacher, Mr. McDonald, who regularly checks in about games and the team’s progress.
“My favorite teacher would have to be Mr. McDonald because he’s always wanting to know about the games and how everything went,” Thornton shared.
His biggest inspirations, though, come from home.
“My parents probably inspire me the most because of all the time and work they have done for me, as well as themselves,” Thornton said.
Over the years, teammates have also played a big role in shaping his experience.
“The teammate who has left the biggest impression on me is Grady Thomas,” he said.
Representing Elgin is something Thornton takes to heart, finding pride in wearing the school’s colors and giving back to the community that’s supported him.
“My favorite part about representing my school is actually being able to represent it,” he said.
