Velma-Alma High School senior Sterling McLain is a multisport athlete currently playing softball, basketball, and track for the Velma-Alma High School Comets. Sterling also plans on trying out for golf during this school year. For softball, Sterling plays the positions of shortstop and 3rd base, and for basketball, Sterling plays the position of shooting guard. Many would consider Sterling a sports veteran, having played sports since she was very little.
Sterling is proud to represent her school and community as a student athlete. Sterling proclaimed, “I feel that it is my responsibility to play with my best ability, and to represent my school confidently.” She went on to state, “I am grateful for my family, their support, and an amazing 15 years in Velma-Alma schools!”
As far as what motivates her, Sterling looks towards her teammates. Sterling said, “My teammates motivate me to be the best I can be.”
In terms of what it has taken Sterling to become successful in sports, Sterling stated, “It requires good body language, and pushing your teammates to keep going, no matter what he circumstances.”
Many memories are made as a student athlete. For Sterling, one moment stands out the most to her thus far. Sterling recalled, “That moment was definitely me falling on my way to third base, yet I still ended up being safe.”
In addition to being a multisport athlete for the Velma-Alma High School Comets, Sterling also invests her time in a multitude of extracurricular activities, including being a member of the National Honor Society, being a member of The Fellowship of Student Athletes, being a member of The FFA Organization, being a member of the National Beta Club, and Youth Group. Sterling is also her Class Secretary.
After graduating from Velma-Alma High School, Sterling has plans for her future. Sterling stated, “After graduating, I plan to go to Murray State and obtain my Associate’s Degree in Science, then go to a Dental School in Moore to become an Orthodontic Assistant. After that, I plan to come back home, settle down, and start a family and raise them in Velma.”
