After a year of growth and rebuilding, the Velma-Alma Comets girls basketball team is ready to take the next step under head coach Dalton Dismuke, now entering his second season at the helm. With a strong group of returning players and a few promising newcomers, the Comets are looking to turn last year’s challenges into momentum for a breakout 2024–25 campaign.
“This group shows such a joy for each other and for the game,” said Coach Dismuke. “Their chemistry, combined with our depth, should really be a huge benefit to us this year.” That depth will be one of Velma-Alma’s greatest strengths, providing the Comets with multiple options at every position and enabling them to play with greater pace and energy throughout games.

The senior class sets the tone for the team’s work ethic and leadership. Presley Condit (5-7, Sr.), a dedicated gym rat over the summer, has become the heart of the team. Known for her elite shooting, Condit has worked tirelessly to expand her all-around game and will be counted on to provide scoring and poise from the guard spot. Fellow seniors Sterling McClain (5-6, Sr.) and Kenlee Leonhart (5-6, Sr.) add valuable experience and toughness, helping anchor both ends of the floor.

Among the underclassmen, Tegan Bowen (5-6, So.) brings infectious energy and communication to the court. Her love for the game and desire to make those around her better have made her a key piece in the Comets’ rotation. Juniors Abby Polluck (5-7, Jr.) and Saylar Garrett (5-6, Jr.), along with sophomores Kynlei Sanner (5-6, So.), Kryslan Tadlock (5-7, So.), Laney Williams (5-7, So.), and Jillyn Kilcrease (5-7, So.), round out a talented and balanced roster that’s capable of competing with anyone.
With improved chemistry, a deeper bench, and a renewed sense of confidence, the Comets are aiming to climb the standings in one of the toughest regions in Class A. If their offseason dedication and team-first mindset carry into the winter, Velma-Alma could surprise plenty of teams this season.
