Freshman wrestler Hayden Vandagriff lives by a simple statement: If it’s challenging, I’m all in. With a focus on becoming the best version of himself he can, Vandagriff also competes for the Duncan High School Demons as a football and baseball player. He is motivated by his love for pushing his limits and the need to make his family, teammates, and coaches proud.
When taking his first steps onto the mat, Vandagriff was moved by the challenge of wrestling. “It’s all about mental toughness and hard work,” he says. He is proud of placing at Junior High State twice, stating that every step forward is a part of his bigger goal: to become a High School State Champion and earn a college scholarship before he graduates.
Though he is focused on sports and training year-round, Vandagriff says that the key to balancing his extracurricular activities and school is discipline and time management. Staying organized, getting ahead on his schoolwork, and keeping well rested are just a few ways Vandagriff ensures that he can perform at his best.
Vandagriff attributes his can-do attitude to his biggest role models, his father at home and his coach, Ashton Cooper, at school. “My biggest inspiration is my dad,” he shares. “He’s taught me the value of hard work, discipline, and that the only things you can control are your attitude and your effort.” Cooper has aided Vandagriff in developing important life and leadership skills. “I have a lot of respect for Coach Cooper as a mentor,” Vandagriff says.
Representing the Demon community means everything to Vandagriff. When he competes, he is motivated to give his all by Duncan, his teammates, and everyone who supports him.
When asked if he had any advice he’d like to tell his younger self, he said “Trust the process – success doesn’t happen overnight. Stay patient, stay consistent, and never let doubt stop you.” Vandagriff thanks the older athletes at Duncan for showing him how to compete at a high level. He plans on working hard to meet and exceed the standards set as he continues his athletic career.
