Velma-Alma enters the upcoming softball season looking to turn the page after finishing 8-20 a year ago, with head coach Kaydee Wright guiding a roster that blends emerging youth with experienced leadership.
Despite graduating a sizable senior class, Wright remains optimistic about the group returning to the field. “We graduated a larger senior class that will be missed, but we have five freshmen coming in that are ready to compete,” she said. “We are excited to see what this team can accomplish this upcoming season.”
Leading the way is junior Jillyn Kilcrease, a proven presence in the circle who has handled pitching duties for the past two seasons. Kilcrease brings a strong understanding of the game and versatility, with the ability to shift to shortstop when needed. Her experience and softball IQ will be key components for the Comets as they look to stabilize both defensively and in the circle.
A trio of freshmen is expected to make an immediate impact, beginning with River Pruitt. An exceptional all-around athlete, Pruitt offers versatility across multiple positions, including catcher, infield, and outfield, while also posing a consistent threat on the bases. Lillie Folsom adds another dynamic option, showcasing her ability to contribute behind the plate, in the infield, and even in the pitching rotation.
Junior Hadley Bartling rounds out a core group that emphasizes both character and competitiveness. Known for her positive presence and coachable nature, Bartling continues to compete for a larger role while setting the tone for team culture.
With a mix of youth and returning experience, Velma-Alma will focus on growth and development early, aiming to build momentum as the season progresses.
