Dibble’s Harper Lanham-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by American Water Solutions

Harper Lanham brings a competitor’s mindset to Dibble High School cross country, but the sophomore’s interests and ambitions stretch well beyond the course.

Lanham, who also participates in basketball, softball, track, Student Council and the Dibble Honor Society, said her strongest inspiration comes from someone whose character sets an example.

“Chesney McGaha, she has an amazing kind heart and is so loving to everyone around her. She is so forgiving to everyone. I strive to be like her”

That focus on people and teamwork has shaped what Lanham has learned through athletics. Cross country can appear individual from the outside, but Lanham sees the importance of working toward a shared goal.

“You may not always like the people you work with but you work with them for the betterment of the team.”

When competition gets demanding, Lanham uses a unique way to stay mentally engaged during long races. Rather than dwelling on the distance, she lets her imagination carry some of the load.

“I zone out and kind of watch a movie in my head.”

Lanham’s ability to push through helped her post her best time at the state meet last season at North Rock Creek, where she ran 14 minutes, 20 seconds. She said the best cross country advice she has received also centers on mental toughness.

“It’s all mental you can be mentally weak and give up or you can not be a baby and keep pushing.”

Away from meets, Lanham enjoys running around Washington, Oklahoma, with her cousin. She also spends free time at the basketball gym and with friends. Her favorite part of being on the cross country team is simple: “The energy of our coach.”

At school, Lanham names government as her favorite subject and Mr. Floyd as a favorite teacher. She also enjoys attending football games in her hometown.

After graduation, Lanham hopes to continue competing in basketball at the college level while pursuing a degree that would prepare her to become a chiropractor. Her experiences as a multi-sport student-athlete have already taught her resilience, cooperation and the value of continuing to move forward when the challenge becomes difficult.
