The impact of a student athlete goes beyond the game. Ryan Hicks, a senior at Chickasha High School is a role model in his community. “Representing my school is a big thing for me. There are lots of younger kids that look up to the football players,” he says.
A life lesson Ryan takes off the field is to persevere through difficult times. “Having character and persevering through tough situations brings a brighter side to all aspects of life.” The best advice he says is to “not get stuck in the past but focus on the present and what you can do to better yourself and change right now.”
Ryan’s favorite part about being on a team is family. This includes teammates and the community which he says is the most supportive around. “I know when we are on the field everyone on my team has my back and I have theirs,” said Ryan.
His first varsity game sophomore year against El Reno stands out as his best football moment. “I was the youngest offensive lineman surrounded by three seniors and one junior. They were all guys I looked up to. It was great to be able to play next to them and get to compete with them all year.
“My teammates and coaches have helped to shape me into the athlete I am today. Cecil Robinson left the biggest impact on me since I started playing offensive line. He has encouraged me and helped me through it all,” said Ryan.
His favorite teacher at CHS is Mr. Schmidt. “He is one of the agricultural education instructors, and I have learned more in his class than any other course. From agriculture to life advice, he has taught me many valuable lessons I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
“I would like to thank God for guiding me in life. I would also like to thank my family, friends, and teachers who have always supported me and pushed me to be the best version of myself. My parents constantly push me to be the best version of myself and support me in everything I do. I would not be anywhere close to where I am today without them,” he said.
