Clayre Parrish takes pride in doing the work that helps a team succeed. The Amber-Pocasset High School junior brings versatility, energy and a team-first mindset to three sports, representing her school in volleyball, basketball and slow-pitch softball.
On the volleyball court, Parrish contributes as an outside hitter and middle blocker, roles that demand a combination of athleticism, communication and determination at the net. She also plays post player in basketball and handles third-base duties for the slow-pitch softball team. Competing across multiple sports has helped Parrish build relationships with teammates while creating memories she will carry well beyond high school.
One of those memories came during her freshman volleyball season. Parrish said she is especially proud of “Being the only public school to make it to the volleyball state tournament in our class my freshman year.” She also cherishes the opportunity to reach the basketball state tournament and play in a historic setting.
“Also making it to the state tournament in basketball for the last time to play in ‘The Big House,’” Parrish said.
Those postseason experiences reinforced an important lesson about athletics and leadership.
“That it’s not about a single person. It’s a team,” Parrish said of what sports have taught her.
That mindset has been shaped by people who have supported and challenged her. Parrish credits her father, Clay, as a major influence in her life.
“My dad, Clay, for giving me someone to look up to. And always giving me advice to be a better version of myself,” Parrish said.
She also appreciates the encouragement she has received from former teammates, particularly Olivia Bradford.
“Olivia Bradford. She was my biggest hype person when I was new to volleyball and willing to help the younger teammates,” Parrish said.
In the classroom, Parrish said Mrs. Clawson has made a lasting impact by encouraging her to step outside her comfort zone.
“Mrs. Clawson for making me come out of my comfort zone and trying new things like sewing and baking,” Parrish said.
When Parrish competes, she values the support that comes from the stands. Her favorite part of representing Amber-Pocasset is simple: “The fans.”
She carries one piece of advice into every season: “Stay ‘Goal Minded’.” That focus, along with the support of her family, continues to motivate Parrish.
“Thank you to my parents and grandparents for always being present,” she said.
Parrish also looks up to Allen Iverson “because he stayed humble in tough times,” a quality she hopes to reflect as she continues pursuing her own goals.
