Navajo High School sophomore Leah Sands is already making her mark on the varsity volleyball court, combining skill, determination and a strong sense of teamwork.
Sands, a 10th grader, said her passion for the sport is fueled in part by athletes she admires, including Nebraska standout Harper Murray.
“Harper Murray is an amazing outside hitter and has had to overcome some of her toughest moments and still pushed through for her team,” Sands said. “That shows how much she cares for the sport and her teammates.”
On the court, Sands values connection just as much as competition. She points to teammate Jennie Cobb as the team’s top setter and credits Alyssa Menees as both the most vocal leader and the one who keeps the team energized.
“What I enjoy most about being on the team is the friendships I have gained and being able to go out on the court and do what we love together,” Sands said.
That bond is reinforced by players like Marly McDaniel, whom Sands describes as relentless on defense. “She is always going to the floor to get digs,” Sands said.
Sands said one of the biggest challenges comes from playing in difficult environments, particularly Erick High School’s gym.
“The court doesn’t have much grip and the gym doesn’t have much room,” she said.
Despite those challenges, Sands continues to develop her game. She prefers a jump serve, noting it allows her to generate more power and put pressure on opponents.
Off the court, Sands enjoys spending time with family and friends, emphasizing the importance of balance in her life. In the classroom, she favors math and credits her seventh-grade teacher, Mrs. Foret, as a lasting influence.
Through volleyball, Sands said she has learned lessons that extend beyond the game.
“Athletics has taught me responsibility and perseverance,” she said.
Above all, Sands values the culture of support within her team.
“What I love most about my team is how we all support each other and push through for each other when we need it,” she said.
With a strong foundation and a team-first mindset, Sands continues to grow as both a player and a teammate for Navajo High School.
