Navajo High School junior Avery Harrison has a passion for basketball. Many would consider Avery a veteran of the sport, having taken up basketball in Third Grade. Avery plays the position of point guard for the Navajo High School Indians.
Avery is proud to represent both her school and community, as a student athlete. Avery proclaimed, “It means a lot to put this jersey on every time. I am proud to have been raised in the Altus/Navajo community, and being able to play for such a family-oriented community means the world to me.”
Faith plays an important role in Avery’s life. She elaborated, “I am involved with my church youth group at Blair First Baptist, and I enjoy hanging out with my friends there.”
In terms of what motivates her, Avery stated, “My parents and family.”
As far as what it has taken to become successful in sports, Avery explained, “It has taken dedication, patience and determination.”
Over the course of a student athlete’s career, many memories are made. For Avery, one memory in particular stood out. Avery stated, “For me, it was starting as a high school freshman and being 14 years old.”
Most student athletes have a teacher that they look up to. Avery stated, “Amber Jackson, is my favorite, as she has taken me in like I am one of her kids.”
In addition to playing basketball at Navajo High School, Avery is involved in other extracurricular activities including, being a member of The FFA Organization, a member of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well as being Class Treasurer.
After graduating from high school, Avery plans on pursuing higher education, as well as continuing to be involved in sports at the collegiate level. Avery explained, “I would like to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma and achieve a degree in Physical Therapy, as well as playing college basketball.”
