Mangum’s Mason Mitchell – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by JCMH Family Care Clinic

At just a sophomore, Mason Mitchell has already made his mark as one of Mangum High School’s most dedicated athletes. Competing in wrestling, football, and track, Mason brings an unmatched level of drive and commitment to everything he does. For him, sports are more than just competition; they’re an opportunity to represent his town, his state, and even his country. “What motivates me is wanting to represent our state or country in any sport I do,” he said. “That thought keeps me pushing every single day.”

A major source of Mason’s motivation comes from home. His biggest role model is his father, who’s been there every step of the way. “He is always there for me and reminds me how good I could be if I put my mind to it,” Mason shared. That encouragement, combined with the guidance of Coach Garrett, has helped Mason grow as both an athlete and a young man. “Coach Garrett has definitely had the biggest impact on my life. He’s constantly pushing me to do my best in wrestling and football.”

Mason knows success doesn’t come easy. He describes it as “countless nights by yourself, perfecting your craft if you want to be good.” That relentless work ethic paid off when he won a tough wrestling match against Marlow, a career highlight that showed just how far his dedication can take him.

In the practice room, Mason thrives on competition. He loves training alongside Cooper Kerbo, a teammate who always pushes him to his limits. He also has a deep respect for Carl Allgood, whom he calls the team’s most underrated athlete. “Carl is always asking how he can be better, and I feel like he doesn’t get the credit he deserves.”

Balancing sports and school is another challenge Mason takes seriously. “You have to pay attention in school and get business done when it needs to be done,” he said.

Above all, representing Mangum means the world to him. “It means everything to represent my town and community, they’re always supporting every sport, every year.” With that kind of pride and passion, Mason is shaping up to be one of Mangum’s brightest young stars.
