The state track meet is a major event for high school athletes across Oklahoma. Qualifying to compete at this level of competition is a major accomplishment. In 2024, Tori Whisenant competed in four events, medaling in the 100 and 300 hurdles. “It was my biggest accomplishment,” she says.
Tori is a sophomore at Hollis High School. Her early success makes her an athlete to watch in the future. Her team may not have fancy track facilities but that does not stop them from being a force in the sport. “I love representing a team as tough as the Hollis track team. We have always been competitive on the track without track facilities to practice on,” she said.
Athletics teach life lessons while students are doing something they love. “I love track because it is challenging and I love to compete,” she says, “when you work hard you get better results.”
Tori says her team is a close group. They thrive cheering for and challenging one another to keep improving. The positive atmosphere keeps them motivated. Freshman, Kaedynce Theademan, particularly impressed Tori this year with her effort and attitude on the track.
Tori wants to give a special thanks to coach Hightower. “She pushed us even if she had to bribe us with sea food,” laughs Tori, whose all-time favorite meal is sea food boil.
In sixth grade students were required to run track. This is when Tori first experienced and began to love track for herself. She had someone to look up to in the track world. “I’m inspired by my big sister because I’m determined to beat her school track records,” said Tori.
In the classroom, Mrs. Alice Manney, is her favorite teacher. “Mrs. Manney creates a fun and comfortable atmosphere in the classroom,” she said.
Tori is active in her school and community. Her other athletic activities include basketball and softball. She is also a member of the Junior Aeolians and her church youth group.
After a busy school year, she looks forward to enjoying her summer break. Tori dreams of spending her summer vacationing the beautiful islands of the Maldives with her friends.
