In the world of competitive cheerleading, trust is key to success. Katelynn Nichole Roman is a senior flyer for the Altus High School cheer team.
“Cheer has built my confidence and helped me learn to uplift others as a team,” she says. “My favorite part about being on the team is being a flyer. It’s so much fun to be in the air and do different tricks. I love this team because we can count on each other. The bonds are unbreakable.”
A recent accomplishment she is most proud of is performing and placing second at the state cheer competition. Roman will never forget the hard work and adrenaline rush of placing at the state level.
According to Roman, battling one’s own mentality is a big challenge in cheerleading. The pressure to make performances look perfect can be hard. It takes a strong will and the ability to push through difficult practices for routines to come out flawless.
The AHS cheer team is both a competitive and a spirit squad. In addition to cheering at regional and state competitions, they cheer for the football, basketball and wrestling teams. Every Friday during football season, the AHS cheerleaders boost school spirit and pride at pep assemblies.
“My favorite part about representing the school as an athlete is feeling the school spirit and knowing that I am part of the spirit that gets put out there. I’m passionate about cheering because I love the drive that it gives me. It pushes me to my full potential,” she said.
A teammate who leaves a big impression on her is Kendall Dodson. “Kendall has always been so sweet and steps up when things need to get done,” Roman says.
The best advice Roman has ever received comes from Head Cheer Coach Nicole Lamb, who says, “Work hard even in the moments where you feel the weakest, because the hard work will pay off.”
Roman is deeply thankful to her coaches for seeing her potential. Without their belief in her, she would not be where she is today. She would also like to thank her family for supporting her through all the ups and downs.
“My family inspires me the most because they always lift each other up and want what’s best for each other,” she said.
Despite her busy schedule with cheerleading and school, Roman makes time for other interests. She loves physical activity and enjoys going on runs. Roman also has a creative mind, which she expresses through her writing.
After high school she plans to attend the University of Oklahoma, where she will pursue her degree in nursing.
