Robert Avila is in his twenty-fifth year as a teacher in the Altus school district. He currently teaches at Altus High School and Altus Junior High School. As a teacher at both schools, he has the opportunity to interact with a wide age range of students. But while some see that as a difficulty, Avila enjoys it.
“I love the challenge of trying to prepare my junior high archers to be better people and shooters,” he said. “And with my high school classes, I love the buffet blend of students I get each semester. I’m a people person, so teaching an elective gives me an opportunity to teach a variety of students throughout the school year.”
He teaches Drawing II, Drawing III, Advanced Studio/Portfolio, Printmaking, Painting II, and Painting III. He also coaches the junior high archery team.
Throughout his career, Avila has been influenced by numerous people. And he looks to be that same to those whose lives he touches.
“At the end of the day, I hope I’ve had the same impact on my students that my teachers had on me,” he stated.
Some teachers like to share advice or tips with other teachers to help them along the way. But Robert says that the biggest piece of advice was never spoken to him.
“I would say with all the educators I’ve had in my educational career, they had this silent advice that I was fortunate to witness. They always made me feel like family, and powerful,” Avila said.
Robert is a proud family man. He is married to his wife, Juanell. They have a daughter, Brittany Gamill, son-in-law Chris, granddaughters Nova and Phoenix. Also, they have a son, Taylor Avila and daughter-in-law, Diminique. They also have a daughter, Lauren Avila, who has passed away.
When he is not in the classroom, Robert likes to spend time with his family.
“I love spending time with my family, friends, and I love playing music with my dad every weekend,” he stated. “It’s my personal release from reality. Me and my dad have been playing music together for the last 30 years. I feel pretty lucky to have this bond with my dad. He’s an amazing player and an awesome dad.”
