MiKayla Reuter is the choir director at Altus High School. As someone who loves music, she says that it was that enjoyment of music that led her to be an educator.
“I wanted to teach so I could help mentor young people. I have always loved music and being in choir, so combining my passions of music and helping others was a natural fit.”
Along with choir, MiKayla also teaches Digital Music Production and Drama, as well as directing the school’s annual All-School production. She is in her second year at Altus. Before coming here, she taught at Olustee-Eldorado.
As a student, MiKayla learned from several teachers who influenced her and helped shape her into the person that she is today. But she has one teacher that she says made the biggest impact.
“My AP English teacher, Janice Pellam, was and is an inspiration to my teaching,” she said.
While she loves music and singing and all that goes with teaching that, Reuter says that as a teacher, she enjoys impacting the next generation, no matter what their interest is.
“I love seeing students dive deeper into whatever they are passionate about,” she stated. “Fostering creativity and learning is one of my greatest joys as an educator.”
During her career, MiKayla has received numerous pieces of advice from other educators. While she appreciates all of them, she has one that she holds to.
“Be kind to yourself and others, show grace often, and ask for help when you need it,” she said. “That is some great advice.”
When she is not teaching, Reuter has other ways that she loves to spend her time.
“I am engaged to be married to my amazing fiancé, Daniel Allen, this April,” she said. “I share his 12-year-old daughter, Dakota. I love spending time with my family and friends, being in nature, and shopping.”
