Altus High School’s Audrey Jones Calafell- Cheer Spotlight – Presented by Consolidated Bearing of Altus

In cheerleading, hitting a perfect routine at Game Day State is a major accomplishment. Audrey Janes Calafell and the Altus High School cheer team did exactly that last year in the competition.

“It felt amazing to see all our hard work pay off and to celebrate together afterward. Competing together takes a lot of teamwork and dedication but it’s such a great feeling when all our hard work pays off. Whether we’re on the sidelines or at a competition, our goal is always to represent our school with pride and spirit!” Calafell exclaims.

In addition to being a competitive team, the AHS cheer team is a spirit squad. They support school events, including football and basketball games, wrestling matches and lead pep assemblies.

“I love hearing the crowd cheer, knowing that our team brings energy and school spirit to every event,” she said.

Cheer combines athleticism, creativity and spirit. This combination is what Calafell loves so much about cheer. She thrives on performing, motivating others and representing her school with pride.

The biggest challenge of cheer, she says, is keeping everything synchronized and sharp under pressure. When done right, cheer looks effortless but in reality, it takes focus, strength and trust in your teammates to make every stunt and routine look effortless.

“I’ve learned that hard work and a positive attitude can get you through tough challenges, both on and off the mat,” says Calafell, adding that confidence makes all the difference in performance and in life.

Heidi Kay Hartgraves and Sydney Williams are teammates she looks up to.

“From giving me rides to always standing up for me, they’ve shown what true friendship and teamwork look like. I’m proud to cheer alongside them every day.

“Massive shoutout to the best cheer coaches ever!! Thank you for pushing us, hyping us up and keeping the energy high no matter what. You make every stunt, every tumble and every routine worth it! Love you Kacie and Lamby!!!” Calafell exclaims.

The biggest inspiration in Calafell’s life is her mom. “She’s the strongest person I know. Raising three kids on her own isn’t easy but she does it with love, patience and determination. She’s shown me what it means to work hard, stay positive and never give up, no matter how tough things get. Her strength and sacrifices motivate me to always do my best and make her proud,” Calafell said.

Outside of cheer, Calafell enjoys being involved in school activities, volunteering and spending time with friends and family. She loves reading and working on creative projects.
After high school, she plans to attend the University of Oklahoma to pursue a degree in the medical field.
