Coming off a 16-14 campaign, Hobart Bearcats softball enters the new season with the kind of veteran core that gives the program confidence it can take another step forward in a tough class. Head coach Bryne Binghom, now in his second year at the school, will lean heavily on a deep senior group that has already logged plenty of innings and big moments together. Ashlyn Welch, Rylie Polm, Emma Gray, Sage Norton and Pearse Porter headline that senior class, bringing experience at multiple positions and a steady presence that sets the tone for the rest of the roster. The Bearcats also gain a major boost with the return of Finnley Talley, who missed last season due to injury but adds another seasoned upperclassman to the lineup and gives Hobart more options both defensively and offensively.
With five starters back, Hobart has a strong foundation to build on last year’s winning record. The program believes the combination of proven seniors and promising underclassmen will allow the Bearcats to play a more complete brand of softball from the first pitch of the season through district play. A talented group of sophomores and freshmen is set to push for time, creating competition at practice and adding depth across the field. That mix of youth and experience should help Hobart handle the grind of the schedule and stay fresh as the year goes on.
The Bearcats know the class they compete in is demanding, with little room for off nights and plenty of quality opponents waiting every week. Still, there is a sense that this group has the balance, maturity and work ethic required to meet that challenge. As the season approaches, Hobart’s focus is on continuing to develop its younger players while letting the senior class lead the way in big games and key situations. If the Bearcats can blend those pieces the way the staff envisions, they will have a legitimate chance to be a solid, dangerous team capable of making noise against anyone on the schedule.
