Sayre High School’s Cam Plummer – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Terry Davis Construction

Senior sprinter and jumper Cam Plummer has learned to live in the fast lane, whether he is circling the track for Sayre High School or juggling a schedule that barely leaves room to breathe.

A multi-event standout for the Sayre boys track team, Plummer competes in the 400-meter relay, 800-meter relay, 1,600-meter relay and the long jump, embracing the challenge of contributing in several different ways. Balancing that load has helped him sharpen skills he believes will carry far beyond the spring season. “Athletics has taught me to be a good multitasker, a supportive teammate, and to stay disciplined,” Plummer said.

That support system is one of the things he values most about being a member of the Eagles’ program. “My favorite part about being on the track team is working hard toward personal goals while being surrounded by teammates who all support each other,” Plummer said. Between races, he is rarely still, choosing to cheer on friends in other events and keep himself loose with stretching as he waits for his next relay call.

Plummer credits his parents for the steady example behind his work ethic and mindset. “My parents inspire me to be the best version of myself every day and to never let any obstacles stand in my way,” he said. That perspective meshes with the message he hears from Sayre’s coaching staff, especially when the workouts get tough. “Coach Pugh reminds us that track is more mental than physical,” Plummer said.

In the classroom, Plummer gravitates toward history, naming Mrs. Moran as his favorite teacher and class. Away from school and practice, there is still not much down time, as he also plays baseball for Sayre. On the rare evenings when he is not at a meet or game, he enjoys watching movies and sitting down for family dinners.

Looking ahead, Plummer plans to attend Oklahoma State University and study business after graduation. He hopes the lessons from long practices and pressure-packed relays will give him a head start in college and the workplace. “Track has definitely helped me stay disciplined and manage my time,” he said. And while he already covers plenty of ground on meet days, there is still one event he would like to try before his high school career ends. “Pole vaulting looks pretty fun,” Plummer said.
