For the first time in several years, Cordell High School will field full boys golf teams at both the varsity and junior varsity levels, signaling a season of depth, competition and high expectations. With 12 golfers on the roster, including three returners, head coach JJ Williams believes the Blue Devils are positioned to make a strong push through the spring schedule and into the postseason.
The team sharpened its game with two fall tournaments, experience that Williams expects to pay off when the scores start to matter this spring. Freshman standout Jaxon Davis headlines the lineup after placing in every junior high tournament last year and finishing fifth in his first high school event this fall. A multi-sport athlete who also starts in football, basketball and baseball, Davis brings years of competitive golf experience despite his age and is poised to be a key leader of the program for years to come.

Around Davis, Cordell will lean on a core of experienced upperclassmen and emerging underclassmen. Senior three-year letterman Corben Dobbs, junior Dylan Edison and sophomore Briggs Reeves all return with a full varsity season under their belts and will help guide a large group of younger golfers. Sophomore Connor Gregg, a three-sport athlete whose natural athleticism and work ethic have fast-tracked his development in golf, is an underclassman to watch as he competes for a varsity spot.
Cordell’s roster depth extends further with juniors Caden Eldridge, Gunther Claunch and Bentley Carter; sophomores Zayden Jones and Eathan Fenning; and freshmen Jaxon Jones and Raygan Wehunt, all of whom gained valuable varsity-level experience during fall competition. Williams said that internal competition for the five varsity bags should elevate the level of play across both squads.
Leadership and character figure just as prominently as scoring averages for this group. Dobbs is known not only as a steady presence on the course but also as a top student, volunteer firefighter and respected leader in FFA. Edison, an FFA officer deeply involved in school and community activities, brings a “service before self” mentality that sets the tone for the program.
With a full tournament slate ahead and state qualification in May circled on the calendar, Cordell’s boys golf team enters the season with a blend of experience, youth and character that has the Blue Devils aiming high.
