Madill’s Mekayla Westbrook – FFA Spotlight – Presented by Farm Credit Western Oklahoma

Madill’s Mekayla Westbrook

Madill High School’s Mekayla Westbrook has built a reputation on the mat as a dedicated wrestler, but her impact extends far beyond competition through her active role in FFA. She balances the demands of athletics and agricultural leadership, using both to shape her character and future goals.

Westbrook said her teammates are a major reason she loves wrestling at Madill, crediting them with creating a motivating and supportive environment. “They come to practice ready to work, push themselves, and help each other improve,” she said.

Coming into the current season, Westbrook said her biggest gains have come in technique and mat awareness as she has grown more confident. She has become more mindful of positioning, balance and timing, which allows her to set up moves instead of rushing them. Now, she said, she recognizes opportunities more quickly, whether it is time to shoot, defend or transition into a pinning combination.

Away from wrestling, Westbrook is heavily involved in FFA and holds leadership and competition roles within her chapter. She served as vice president on last year’s southeastern regional Opening and Closing Ceremonies champion team and also competes in livestock judging, public speaking, ninth grade creed, showing livestock and the Agriculture Communications team. Those activities, she said, have helped her grow more confident and responsible.

Westbrook said one of her favorite parts of FFA is how it emphasizes focus and resilience. Preparing for contests, managing responsibilities and working through projects have taught her to stay committed to goals, even when things do not go as planned. She said FFA has helped her build mental strength and perseverance that carry over into school, sports and everyday life.

Through both athletics and FFA, Westbrook said she has learned how to be an effective member of a team. She values communication, trust and supporting others, and said those experiences have shown her that every role matters. Taking feedback, encouraging teammates and staying accountable have helped her grow as both a leader and a team member, lessons she plans to carry with her long after high school.
