Altus freshman Ali Waites may be new to high school sports, but she’s already making a name for herself with her talent, determination, and positive attitude. A dual-sport athlete in volleyball and basketball, Ali thrives on the daily challenge of improving her skills and pushing herself to get better.“I’m motivated by the challenge to get better every day,” she said. “Encouragement from my coaches and teammates really matters to me; it gives me confidence and helps me believe
in myself.”That encouragement paid off this fall whenAli helped her team reach the Class 5 A volleyball tournament, an unforgettable milestone that showcased what hard work
and teamwork can achieve. “It showed me how great coaches and amazing teammates can accomplish together,” she said. “We have a young team and plan to be back even stronger
next year.”Ali draws inspiration from her family, who she says keep her grounded and focused on what’s important. “My parents and grandparents always put God first and showed me how to work hard, stay humble, and do the right thing,” she explained. She also credits her sister and cousin, Ty Willis, who serves in the military, for motivating her to stay confident, courageous, and faithful, even when she faces
challenges. One of Ali’s biggest influences outside of family is coach Parsons, who coached her in fifth and sixth-grade basketball. “She’s always understood that I’m my toughest critic,” Ali said. “Her encouragement, pep talks, and tough love shaped me both on and off the court.”Balancing two sports, dance, and pre-AP classes keeps Ali’s schedule packed, but she’s
learning to stay organized and take care of herself. “It’s not always easy, but I’m figuring out how to balance everything and not be so hard on myself,” she said.
Whether she’s battling Lawton MacArthur, her favorite rival to beat, or practicing alongside teammates like Hayden Costello and HadleyWallace, Ali brings passion and effort to everything she does. “Representing Altus means everything to me,” she said proudly. “I just want to make my school and community proud every time I step on the court.”
