Leadership, drive, and passion — those are the traits that define Cordell junior guard, Calliy Walker. Entering her third season on the court, Walker has her sights set high, both for herself and her team. “My personal goals this season are to be a strong leader offensively and defensively, as well as off the floor,” she said. “I want to help set the tone for how we approach every game and every challenge.”
For Walker and her teammates, this year’s atmosphere feels special. “The team morale this year has been extremely welcoming and family oriented,” she said. “We all get along really well, and that makes a huge difference when we step on the court together.” That sense of connection has translated into tangible growth. “The biggest improvement I have seen thus far in this team is our ability to play together as a unit and execute what is needed in a game situation,” she added.
A 5’5 point guard, Walker averaged 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists per game last season — steady numbers that reflect her versatility and leadership. Her approach to the game is both cerebral and confident. “When reading a defense, I initially look for any gaps or open spaces where I could take it to the rim or pass for an open shot,” she said. “But after that, I start to think about the next play, analyzing what could potentially happen if a pass was made here or there.”
When game time comes, focus takes over. “When I step onto the court, my mindset is to do whatever it takes to help my team succeed no matter how hard it may be,” Walker said. “I want to be an impact player — whether that’s through stats or leadership.”
Her long-term goals reflect her maturity and heart for the game. “When I graduate, I want my legacy to be known as someone who was passionate, a team player, and who truly wanted her teammates to succeed,” she said. “I want to be remembered for my leadership, passion, and dedication to the program.”
Also active in track, cross country, FCA, student council, and class leadership, Walker hopes to earn a sports scholarship and continue her education after high school — a fitting goal for a leader who gives her all, on and off the court.
