There are a lot of ups and downs that come along with being a parent. And when your kids are athletes, that just adds to the mix. Megan Porter is the mother of two, and she says that while it can be tough to watch at times, it will make them better people.
“There are a lot of emotions that come with sports,” she said. “Watching your kid strive so hard for something and sometimes fail is difficult as a parent. We want to help and fix things for them, but ultimately they have to learn and grow through those experiences themselves.”
Porter’s son Hayes is a sophomore at Hobart High School, where he plays football, basketball, and golf. Halle is in the seventh grade, and she competes in basketball and softball. Megan is a Radiation Therapist at Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma. In the free time that she gets, she enjoys doing a few different things.
“I like to read books and exercise,” she said. “A lot of my free time is taken up with my kid’s activities, and I absolutely love every second of it.”
Helping her kids become good adults is important to Porter. She says one way that she helps with this is by teaching her kids to have their priorities in order.
“I always hope that my kids put Jesus first, family second, and school and sports after that,” Porter stated. “We talk a lot about what it takes to be successful, and having your priorities in order gets you closer to your goals, but you also have to see the bigger picture and what’s most important in life.”
Raising her kids in Hobart is something that Megan is proud to do because the community is always there for the students.
“Hobart has great community and school support for our kids and sports,” she said. “Once a Bearcat, always a Bearcat! We have so many sponsors financially that help to support our programs and we are able to fund and provide things for each sport. As the booster president, that means so much to me and our club.”
