Dibble’s Payton Phillips – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by The First National Bank & Trust Co.

Payton Phillips is a junior at Dibble High School. She participates in the Dibble Honor Society, the Dibble Student Leader Association, STUCO, basketball, and cheer. She got her start in cheer since she was four from her mom and her ni-ni. Her favorite part about cheer is getting to lead and cheer on her team, as well as tumbling and flying. The highest moment in Payton’s career so far has been winning princess for homecoming this year, and winning state for cheer in the 6th through the 9th grade.

Her biggest role model is her mom. Payton’s learned so much from her, including the fact that she has to work hard for what she wants, but to have fun while she does it. A quote from her mom that sticks with her is “never lose the light in your eyes”. Payton says it means never to lose your smile and happiness, and not to let anyone or anything take it from you. Her biggest positive impacts have been her parents. They’ve shown her that no matter how much life tries to throw you down, you can always get back up stronger.

Payton’s favorite subject in school is math because she enjoys having to work the questions out and how much they challenge her. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Lewis, because Payton really likes the way she teaches, she’s really understanding, she’s always willing to help, and she makes sure that everyone’s involved. After high school, Payton plans to go to college to study business.

When things get tough, Payton’s parents and coach are what get her through because they never stop believing in her or encouraging her. To be a great athlete, Payton says it takes being a leader on and off the field, to be able to communicate with your team, to be coach able, and to be accountable. Sports have taught her how to be dedicated and to never give up on herself. Her advice to her fellow athletes is to always keep your head up and never lose confidence in yourself.
