Altus’ Charlie Howard – FFA Spotlight – Presented by Southwest Crop Insurance

Involvement in Altus FFA is a life changing experience for Charlie Howard. Now a senior, and his chapter president, he encourages others to see for themselves the opportunities FFA has to offer. “It’ll be the best choice and experience of your life if you make something of it,” he says.

Charlie was encouraged by his sister to join FFA. “I always tell other students that FFA isn’t just agriculture, it’s an organization that develops a student’s ability in problem solving and creativity. I like to tell people that no matter their background they can find a place and a passion in FFA,” said Charlie.

Charlie is most involved in agricultural mechanics and public speaking. Sunday afternoons spent in the ag building perfecting the opening ceremonies with his team are his favorite memories of FFA.

The best advice was given when he joined the shooting sports and archery teams. “Laurence Wilks, told me when I first started shooting that when it’s my turn, make something of it, stay focused and not to lose track of the goal,” said Charlie.

An SAE allows students to explore real life agricultural business. “My SAE is running my cattle herd. I rent around 900 acres. I raise stocker calves and a multitude of small grains for my herd of 52 cows and five bulls,” he said.

Charlie’s grandfather inspires him every day. “He is almost 80 and still works 16-hour-days feeding, watering and caring for all his livestock. I hope that one day I can be a model to others about work ethic and honesty like he is to me,” he says.

The FFA member leaving the biggest impression on Charlie is Luke Gallagher. “He was always able to put a smile on a member’s face who wasn’t having a great day, and he was brilliant when he helped me in the shop. He knew how to teach you in a way that the next time you knew how to do it,” said Charlie.

He wants to thank his agriculture educators, Mr. Farquhar, Mr. Stafford, Mrs. Davis, and Ms. Dunham. Their encouragement pushes him to step out of his comfort zone.

In addition to FFA, Charlie is an active member of National Honor Society.
